Natural ADHD Remedies: Simple Natural Treatments That Work!
What Are The Best Natural ADHD Remedies for Children and Adults?
Natural ADHD Remedies: The Simple Natural ADHD Treatments That Work
Natural ADHD remedies can not only prove to be safer but also more effective for both children and adults!
Many people do not truly understand ADHD, let alone how to help those who may be struggling with attention deficit disorders.
Unfortunately, many ADHD children and ADHD adults assume that ADHD treatment options are limited to prescription ADHD medications because they are unaware or misinformed about the natural ADHD remedies that exist.
I have read many articles that attempt to explain the ADHD brain and experiences that people with ADHD live with on a day-to-day basis.
As someone who has lived with ADHD for their entire life, I believe it is of equal importance for a person living with an ADHD child or ADHD adult to have a clear understanding of the disorder.
Therefore, I created a humorous but brutally honest article about my life to provide a view through the eyes of an ADHD adult that hopefully paints a clear picture of ADHD in adults.
I would also recommend these 20 essential things to remember about your loved ones who may struggle with ADHD. These are essential and often true tips that can help save a relationship involving one or both ADHD adults.
My Own Struggle with ADHD
I have put myself through a lot of trial and error involving extensive research and personal experimentation. This includes attempts to naturally treat ADHD with the goal of not only helping myself but helping others who are struggling with ADHD. I can relate to the struggles of living with ADHD and have empathy for those who get frustrated by a number of people who are simply uneducated about what causes ADHD, as well as the ADHD symptoms associated with it.
Not only is it difficult to live with ADHD but many people don't realize how common it is for those struggling with ADHD symptoms to also struggle with other intense emotions and anger.
Admittedly, some attempts have worked better for me over the years than others. At one time, the most common and “easiest” method of managing the problem was through prescribed medications. We knew less about the disorder when I was younger and many physicians would simply write ADHD medications as the only solution to help alleviate ADHD symptoms. However, we are learning that many short-term and long-term side effects can also be associated with these stimulant medications. I have learned that it takes more than prescription medications to successfully manage my ADHD symptoms.
Many of these medications are still widely used. However, research is starting to reveal more of the potentially dangerous short-term and long-term side effects of common stimulant prescription drugs, like Adderall and Ritalin.
This is continuing to raise concerns from parents of ADHD children and adults with ADHD. Parenting ADHD children can be difficult for the whole family. I would highly recommend that you visit my review of the ImpactADHD program. It is one of the most effective and successful resources for parents of ADHD children.
The Importance Of Understanding Attention
We continue to gain a better understanding of attention and defining the parameters to which attention is measured can certainly be improved.
Attention is more commonly being viewed as a complex system, comprised of three levels.
The 3 Levels Of Attention
3. “Executive” Attention – Governs planning and high-order decision-making.
Advanced neuroscience research and technology have allowed us to attain more comprehensive data and knowledge to gain a better understanding attention and attention deficit disorders, which opens the door to new alternative ADHD treatments and natural ADHD remedies.
5 Simple Natural ADHD Remedies You Should Use
1. Create Routines As A Simple Natural ADHD Remedy
ADHD children and adults with ADHD are motivated by variety, new activities, adventure, and commonly known for thinking outside of the box.
However, the opposite is what actually balances us out.
We sometimes assume that natural ADHD remedies must involve some type of medicine or natural supplements.
Perhaps, it involves some kind of natural ADHD diet?
The foods we consume certainly can play a role in the level of ADHD symptoms a person may experience. It is important to consume the right amount of brain foods on a daily basis.
However, a remedy does not necessarily require medicine. A natural ADHD remedy also involves a treatment. Treatments come in a variety of forms with the most important element being the overall effectiveness of the remedy.
The Truth about ADHD
People with ADHD need structure and regularity in their lives to counter our natural tendency to lean towards “chaos.”
However, this can be much more simple than it may seem.
ADHD children and adults with ADHD should embrace consistent daily routines. We commonly thrive by routine. Routine helps automatically organize the chaos that commonly goes on inside the ADHD brain.
This can apply to a specific schedule and routine for doing homework, working, exercising, eating, relaxing, and even for going to bed each night and waking up each morning.
Each of these activities should have specific systems to essentially create positive habits for those with ADD and/or ADHD.
Regular routines will help offset these chaotic lifestyle behaviors. Adopting structure into our lives is vital for balancing out our active minds.
2. Natural ADHD Remedies Can Start With Regular Sleep Cycles
It is important to understand that the sleep necessities of ADHD children and adults with ADHD are a bit different from our “normal” counterparts.
Typically, ADHD children, adolescents, and ADHD adults need more sleep.
Admittedly, this can be one of the most difficult routines for me to consistently follow and ADHD sleep disorder is a common problem that I still struggle with at times. Also, those of us taking stimulant ADHD medications can commonly struggle to fall and stay asleep at night. This can cause brain fog the next day.
ADHD Sleep Disorders
ADHD adults and children with ADHD are familiar with that “wired” feeling commonly experienced at night because it can be quite challenging to turn off the ADHD brain.
The problem is that when we stray from natural, healthy sleep cycles and routines, it can have a domino effect that can negatively impact other daily routines.
This is why it is absolutely vital for ADHD children and adults with ADHD to develop consistent and calming sleep routines.
Helpful Sleep Routines Can Be Critical & Effective Natural ADHD Remedies:
Read in print! Reading on computer screens, tablets, smartphones, etc. will NOT help sleep routines and patterns and should be avoided. Try reading a book or magazine, instead!
Also a very calming activity but again, one that I would recommend practicing with pen and paper, as opposed to using any kind of technological monitor and/or screen.
- Listening to calming music as an effective Natural ADHD Remedy –
I can't possibly recommend a brand new resource that I discovered as one of the most effective Natural ADHD remedies to specifically support and improve focus and better sleep patterns. Focus at Will is one of the most cost-effective resources you will find.

- Home Yoga and Simple Stretching are also excellent pre-sleep activities for the ADHD adult and child with ADHD.
ADHD adults or adolescents need to trust me when I say to “PUT THE SMART PHONES AND TABLETS AWAY.”
I am not special because even as I wrote that sentence, I need remind myself of the same thing each and every night. It takes a conscious effort to really do it!
Parents of ADHD children should limit these devices and designate earlier times in the day to use them.
Avoid the Distractions
Adults with ADHD should also designate certain times for mobile electronic devices and stick to a routine schedule for when to turn them off and put them away.
The ADHD brain is naturally more active than others, more “wired” at night, commonly concentrates intensely and both ADHD children and adults with ADHD frequently find it much more difficult to wind down and shut off their active minds.
Taking a warm shower or bath in the evening, perhaps, even soaking in Epsom salts, and immediately followed by a pre-bed calming routine can prove to be effective as well.
ADHD Sleep Disorder is common for ADHD children and adults with ADHD. It makes sense given our active minds and unique ADHD brain. However, following specific sleep routines can help slow down our active minds and help alleviate sleep problems.
Sleep is absolutely essential for overall brain health and even more important for those who have a particularly active brain like those struggling with attention deficit disorders like ADD and ADHD.
3. One of the Most Important Natural ADHD Remedies Requires Balanced Nutrition
The importance of balanced nutrition is an essential natural ADHD remedy that is commonly overlooked.
Research continues to reveal the indispensable benefits that balanced nutrition and an “ADHD diet” can play as a natural ADHD remedy.
Children and adults with ADHD, very commonly have nutritional deficiencies.
These deficiencies are very important to neurotransmitter balance and when they are off-balance, ADHD symptoms are often aggravated.
Some of the most common nutritional deficiencies include low Vitamin B levels, low levels of amino acids, and low magnesium.
Let's look a little deeper into the common B vitamin deficiencies that exist in children and adults.
B Vitamin Deficiencies in Children with ADD and/or ADHD
B vitamins have a huge impact on good overall, mental health and are necessary for essential mental functions.
Typical vitamin B deficiency symptoms that affect the ability to learn are commonly discovered in children with ADD and/or ADHD.
Symptoms of these deficiencies include moodiness, confusion, dizziness, forgetfulness, and loss of alertness.
There are 13 different B vitamins that your body needs. You can read more about the effects of Vitamin B 12 and folate deficiency, specifically related to brain development in children, at the US National Library of Medicine.
Vitamin B Deficiencies
If you identify these deficiencies or even have lab tests done to confirm, you may want to take action.
The good news is that there are some very easy and simple actions that you can take to fight these deficiencies. One of the best things that you can do to protect your child from vitamin B deficiencies is to add Vitamin B rich foods and supplements into their diet.
You may want to include foods in their diet like meat, fish, poultry, milk, and yogurt. Foods also rich in vitamin B are nuts, whole grains, and leafy green vegetables.
You should also consider an effective multi-vitamin, specifically one that includes all of the essential B-Vitamins, for your children. One of the highest rated and widely used children's multi-vitamins that contain the appropriate amount of B-Vitamins is made by TerraPur.
It also contains other vital nutrients for children, which include Vitamin C, B3, B5, B6, B12, Beta-Carotene, Biotin, Folic Acid, and Zinc. Feel free to check it out and read the many positive parent/customer reviews here: Children's Premium Complete Gummy Multivitamin by TerraPur.
B Vitamin Deficiencies in Adults with ADD and/or ADHD
Although it may be a little more common among children, B Vitamin deficiencies are also a common issue for adults, especially those suffering from ADD and/or ADHD. It is essential to implement certain foods in your diet that are also rich in B vitamins.
This includes meat, fish, yogurt, Swiss and feta cheeses, cured Ham, clams, eggs, turkey, and others.
You should also consider supplementing your daily dose of B-Vitamins. There are plenty of B-vitamin supplements available, but the one that I personally use and recommend is Vitafusion B Complex Gummy Vitamins for Adults.
Other than the fact that it is a high-quality supplement, they will also provide you a 3-pack supply that lasts and is offered at a very reasonable price.
Importance of Vitamin B and ADHD
I reorder these every couple of months and then I don't need to think about it. Another suggestion I would make is to consider supplementing nootropics into your diet.
I am currently in the process of reviewing multiple nootropic supplements that are available on the market. You can read about the process, the definition of nootropics and the supplements I will be testing, here.
So far, although I am early in the process of testing multiple options and weeding out the good from the garbage, I have preferred the overall effects that I have felt from OptiMind.
I have even arranged for an exclusive (but probably limited time) offer, that will only be made available to the readers of Focus Here and Now. Check out the review, but don't take my word for it because you get to try it out for Free.
This is the type of product that could eventually replace the need for prescription drugs like Adderall and Ritalin in the future.
I find the topic to be fascinating and the companies that are truly passionate, put in their due diligence, research, and pride behind continuing to improve and develop high-quality products, may prove to provide a blessing to the ADD/ADHD community.
Based on what I currently know about nootropic supplements, I would still only recommend them for adults. However, there are other great natural ADHD remedies in supplement form for children as well.
4. Morning Exercises As A Natural ADHD Remedy
For many children and adults, a serotonin imbalance is a contributor to causing their ADD or ADHD. Morning exercises can help give your serotonin the boost that it needs.
Whether it is a morning walk or run, even running up and down the stairs 5-6 times, jumping jacks, a quick sit-up and/or push-up routine, running, etc, will help boost those serotonin levels.
It does not have to be a full workout or anything intense, but something to get the blood flowing. Exercise truly helps with ADD and ADHD in many different ways. It has been shown in many cases to help improve your overall mood and helps to increase attention.
Some children and adults have noticed such incredible improvements in their ADD or ADHD disorders from exercise, that it has actually replaced their need entirely for prescription medications. Some excellent studies have been conducted about the benefits of exercise to the ADD and ADHD brain that you can read more about here.
5. Fish Oils As A Natural ADHD Remedy
A study from the Mass General Hospital and Harvard Medical School found that adding omega-3 fatty acid supplements to the diet of a child and/or adult in the form of fish oil, offers an effective first-line intervention for ADD and ADHD.
Researchers have concluded the combination of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids are an effective, well-tolerated treatment, especially for children with ADHD.
Fish Oils and ADHD
I have been taking daily fish oil supplements for quite some time, as well as adding natural fish oils into my daily diet. I have tried many over the years, but for the past year, I have been more than satisfied with Dr. Tobias' Omega 3 Fish Oil Pills (180 Counts) – Triple Strength Fish Oil Supplement (1,400mg Omega 3 Fatty Acids: 600mg DHA + 800 mg EPA per Serving). In my opinion, it is the most high-quality fish oil supplement on the market.
This is not only the highest quality fish oil supplement on the market but also offers the biggest bang for your buck with a 3-month supply for under $30. You can read reviews from the nearly 800 people that have left comments and given an overall consensus just under 5 out 5 stars.
There is a lot of evidence, as studies continue, showing that these fish oils, which are primarily found in oily fish, is important for brain function. This is something that I discuss in a previous article about various brain foods.
Bonus Alternative ADHD Remedies – What are Nootropics?
You have probably heard me talk about nootropics a lot. Many of our loyal readers and I have had a lot of success using some of these high-quality brain supplements. I would recommend that you consider starting with a pre-formulated nootropic supplement stack that you can take daily. Be sure to check our nootropic supplement reviews page to read our latest views of the most popular nootropic supplements on the market. Some are certainly better than others. However, our reviews are always honest and unbiased. Therefore, we will tell you about the great, good, bad, and the flat out brain supplement scams that exist out there.
You may have no idea where to start:
No problem! We will customize a nootropic stack for your specific cognitive needs and goals for free!
Some of you may be skeptical at first that a brain supplement can actually provide cognitive benefits. I know I was extremely skeptical when I first started reviewing different products. In fact, I never intended to spend much time talking about them. However, I was fortunate to have a good experience with the first pre-formulated nootropic supplement stack that I tried that it sparked my curiosity about the quality of others. I have used many different formulas and reveal my own personal experiences while taking them.
We are all Different
Each and every one of us is different. We have different brain and body chemistry. Therefore, what may work perfectly for one person, may not work as well for another. However, I can confidently say that nootropics do work. It is all about finding the right combination of nootropic ingredients or the right pre-formulated nootropic brain supplement that meets your particular cognitive goals and needs.
Here's the deal:
I am not claiming that nootropics can cure ADD or ADHD. However, many people, including myself, have reported results that showed certain nootropic brain supplements helped to control and even alleviate certain ADHD symptoms. This includes focus, attention, concentration, memory, mood, motivation, productivity, reduction of stress and anxiety, brain health, and an improvement in overall cognitive functioning. Feel free to start exploring the world of nootropics by reading our current top 10 best brain supplements of 2017. This is a list of the best nootropic brain supplements we have tried over the past 4+ years of testing and research.
People commonly have a lot of questions about nootropics and what they can expect from taking them. Please, never hesitate to contact us to ask any questions that you may have about nootropics and/or any other natural ADHD remedies.
Continuing Research for Natural ADHD Remedies
One of my biggest motivators for creating this site was to provide people like me with information about alternative ADD and ADHD treatments and natural ADHD remedies to help them get off the prescription drugs for good.
After years and years of taking various prescription ADHD medications, I eventually grew tired of the countless side effects that were associated with these medicines.
Through research and a ton of trial and error, I was able to find alternative ADHD treatments that I have found to not only be as effective as most ADD and ADHD prescriptions, but I also find myself feeling better. I feel healthier and continue to grow more confident, as I manage my condition more effectively. However, it doesn't just go away. It takes a combination of effort and sometimes supplementation to better manage your ADHD symptoms.
There is no set “cure” for ADD and/or ADHD. At times, when I have found myself deviating from following the methods, diet, and supplements that have worked for me, I am quickly reminded about just how real my disorder is and how important it is that I continue to manage it.
My research and knowledge on the topic will only continue to grow, as more research, studies, information, and methods are developed. I look forward to sharing this information with you and continuing this journey together.
As always, please feel free to comment below with any questions, general comments, information, and/or experiences you have had using any of the recommendations I have made above. Also, never hesitate to add any knowledge you may have about the topic or experiences with any natural ADHD remedies that have worked for you! I look forward to discussing the topic further with all of you!
