Biofeedback Therapy Training- Neurofeedback for Attention Deficit Disorders
There is a common misconception that ADHD treatments require the use of prescription medications.
Can Biofeedback Therapy Training have a Lasting Effect on Alleviating ADHD?
While these medications can serve their purpose and be helpful for some, they are also frequently over-prescribed. Fortunately, scientific research continues to pave the way for safer and effective alternative ADHD treatments.
Unfortunately, many ADHD prescription medications like Adderall, Ritalin and more recently, Vyvanse, often come with many potentially dangerous side effects. These may include loss of appetite, increased anxiety, nausea, headache, weakness, dizziness, insomnia, stomach pains, restlessness, uneven heartbeats, and fever, just to name a few.
These medications can not only exacerbate other medical conditions and/or create new ones but are also known for their addictive qualities. While, positive benefits may include enhanced attentiveness and motivation, people are starting to notice the longer-term effects of these drugs.
I should know. I was one of them.
The Rise of the Prescription ADD/ADHD Medication Empire
ADHD medications saw a dramatic increase during the early 90's and I was right in the heart of it.
Although, I thought Adderall was a “miracle drug,” the way most people do when they first start taking it, over time, it destroyed my appetite, significantly increased my anxiety, caused me to anger easily, and have lapses in memory.
I had also built a tolerance for it and didn't feel that the benefits outweighed the side effects anymore. Others have also reported these conditions, along with psychosis, violent and aggressive behavior, addiction, increased blood pressure, lowered sex drive, and serious heart conditions.
While, “controlled” long-term studies about the effects of these drugs may be limited, some adults with ADHD are living proof that many of these claims are true.
Fortunately, research has aggressively continued to gain a better understanding of ADHD, leading to safer, effective attention deficit hyperactivity disorder treatments.
This has included positive progression in behavioral therapy and natural ADHD treatments, as well as innovative advancements in biofeedback therapy training, also referred to as neurofeedback.
Dr. Frank H. Duffy, a Professor and Pediatric neurologist of Harvard Medical School, believes that biofeedback therapy training through neurofeedback should play a major therapeutic role in many difficult areas.
He states, “In my opinion if any medication had demonstrated such a wide spectrum of efficacy it would be universally accepted and widely used.”
Biofeedback Therapy Training to Treat ADHD
Extensive research shows potential for future generations to reduce the need for ADHD prescription medications.
While they may be helpful and provide certain benefits, the question is whether the benefits outweigh the risks.
As we gain a better understanding ADD and ADHD, we are getting closer to being able to manage it without the need for potentially dangerous prescription ADHD medications.
One potential solution is also sometimes referred to as, “video therapy,” but is it a viable solution for children and adults with attention deficit disorders?
I have received many inquiries regarding neurofeedback and various biofeedback therapy training systems both here and within the ADHD support group forums.
What is Neurofeedback and Biofeedback Therapy Training and How does it Relate to ADHD?
Neurofeedback and biofeedback therapy training have continued to be more widely researched and implemented throughout the country.
It involves technology that allows us to literally see the physiological signals of the mind-body system.
Biofeedback therapy training is aimed at allowing us to gain control over our physiological state.
This includes attention, stress levels and overall performance.
Neurofeedback studies have shown that this type of biofeedback therapy training can help potentially alleviate neurological symptoms that include, ADD and ADHD, insomnia, anxiety, stress, migraine headaches and even chronic pain.
As research continues, we are seeing the many benefits that it may provide and eventually, be more widely accepted and utilized in the medical community as a safe alternative treatment for various neurological disorders. The ultimate goal of biofeedback therapy training is to achieve results that are permanent.
How Does Biofeedback Therapy Training Work?
Neurofeedback with biofeedback therapy training requires the patient to sit in a chair with non-evasive electrodes attached to their scalp while their brainwaves are being measured.
Beta Waves and Biofeedback Therapy Training
Beta Waves are associated with the state of mind that is linked to problem solving, focus, attentiveness and an alert state of mind.
For example, as you are reading this article, your brain is producing a high level of beta waves.
However, if a dis-regulated pattern showed you were producing lower levels of beta waves while you were reading this article, you would be experiencing symptoms of inattention, very much like those with ADHD may experience.
If your brain was producing a pattern showing too many beta waves, then you may be experiencing symptoms of impulsiveness, hyperactivity, or anxiety.
The goal for ADHD, using neurofeedback and biofeedback therapy training is to train the brain to increase attention span with the help of a practitioner teaching the patient how to keep their brains calm and focused, while subtly using operant conditioning.
The patient is rewarded for producing certain brainwaves during the training with subtle rewards that may be visual, auditory, and/or tactile.
Clinical Neurofeedback Research with Biofeedback Therapy Training
An international team, led by researchers and neurologists from The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, recently received funding from the National Institute of Mental Health to examine whether training of specific brain wave frequencies is an effective treatment for relieving ADHD symptoms and potentially reduce the need for ongoing medication in children and adults.
Most children with ADHD have an excess of low-frequency beta brain waves, which is an indication of inattention.
During the study, sensors were attached to each participant's scalp and brain wave patterns were measured as they focused on a computer screen, where they learned to control the movement of certain objects, such as a spaceship, by controlling the speed of their brain waves.
Neurofeedback technology picks up the natural electricity generated by the brain to decipher frequency levels of waves, which then translates the feedback onto a computer screen through various patterns and images in real-time.
I am kind of a science geek myself and not only does it sound cool, but it seems pretty fun and most participants find it to be quite entertaining.
Biofeedback Therapy Training – Examples for Treating Attention Deficit Disorders
Some biofeedback therapy training exercises were like a game, which involved participants trying to control the speed of spaceships shown on a screen, using nothing but their own brainwaves.
For example, if they want to make one of the spaceships go faster, it will only respond to a specific and precise concentration that they would have to initiate.
If the participant loses focus, their ship would slow down. The patients can actually control the speed of their brain waves, and as they practice staying in that “zone,” they get better at it. The idea is to make it become more habitual. They are essentially retraining their brains to improve attentiveness.
These types of controlled clinical neurofeedback studies with biofeedback therapy training continue with ADHD children and adults while progress and treatment plans are evaluated during the course of the trials.
Is Neurofeedback Right for You?
Neurofeedback with biofeedback therapy training research continues to reveal promising results. It has shown definitive improvement to control and behavior in children and adults with ADHD.
The technology is rapidly improving and continues to make “waves” towards becoming one of the more mainstream alternative ADHD treatments.
How Long Has Biofeedback Therapy Training with Neurofeedback Been Around?
While neurofeedback with biofeedback therapy training seems fairly new, the reality is that neurofeedback research has been studied for more than 40 years.
If you have the time and the budget to afford neurofeedback therapy and you have access to one of the more reputable medical centers that offer this type of cognitive treatment, you may find it is worth it to give it a try.
However, there can be some potential drawbacks…
Biofeedback Therapy Training Drawbacks
While biofeedback research for treating ADHD has been promising, the costs associated with this type of cognitive therapy are still fairly high for the average family household and often involve ongoing treatment and costs well into the thousands.
The hope is that continued research will continue to show that video-based exercises, combined with biofeedback therapy training, will result in patients learning to control their own brain activity, while effectively “retraining” their own brain waves toward healthier patterns.
This can eventually lead to truly ground-breaking alternative ADHD alternative treatment options that could eliminate the need for ongoing intervention through potentially dangerous medications.
Biofeedback Therapy Training Centers
Unfortunately, there is still a limited amount of high-quality biofeedback therapy training facilities and professionals available. Therefore, some may find themselves feeling forced to wait for this therapy to become more readily available.
However, this does not mean that ongoing treatment through stimulant medications is the only option that you have available to you or your child.
We are continuing to learn about new methods, resources, and alternative ADHD treatments that are providing parents of ADHD children and the growing number of adults diagnosed with attention deficit disorders with more options.
As someone who has been diagnosed with ADHD for over 20 years, I found myself in a position where I had to do a lot of trial and error and I share many of those experiences throughout the site. Today, there is much more information and resources available to us outside of prescription medications.
However, you still may want to utilize biofeedback therapy training, considering the many potential benefits that it can provide to help alleviate symptoms of ADHD, anxiety, stress, insomnia, and pain, amongst others.
Fortunately, in a rapid-paced technological era, some incredibly innovative and effective tools are being made more readily available to us that allow us to utilize biofeedback therapy training in the comfort of our own homes.
