This has been a very difficult year+ on the majority of the entire world due to COVID. Tons of people around the globe have fallen into various difficult mental states. It has been even more difficult for those with ADHD at times who are even more prone to debilitating depression and anxiety.

ADHD in children, teens, and adults largely depends on a set routine. When the COVID pandemic hit, their routine was abruptly interrupted. ADHD in children makes this more worrisome as many are learning in the most important developmental times of their lives. 

In a study published in the Journal of Psychiatric Research, researchers discovered an interesting discovery amongst a group of 134 adolescents and young adults. The results reported problems with social isolation, difficulties engaging in online learning, motivation issues, and boredom that increased during the pandemic. Without question, this affects adults with ADHD too but ADHD in children can have a significant negative impact on their learning abilities. COVID has only made these struggles more difficult. 

ADHD in Teenagers Differ from ADHD in Children

Teenagers with ADHD are at risk for only being able to physically interact at school and the pandemic is preventing that and setting them further behind. Teenagers find themselves picking up some bad habits. Less are interested in furthering their education. Less physical activities are taking place. Many high schools and even college tournaments have been canceled. These activities help shape your teenager or child with ADHD for the future. Especially considering the situation, social media and a lack of live interaction and social engagement is isolating children, teens, and adults. It will make it much more difficult to get back to a more social environment that doesn't involve phones and social media. 

ADHD in Children Makes Remotely Learning DIfficult

Remote learning has been shown to negatively affect ADHD in children. Remote learning is not as naturally engaging, and children with ADHD really need engaging environments to learn well. They often lose the structure and routine that a lot of people with ADHD rely on and a consistent routine.

Numerous studies have shown ADHD symptoms have worsened during the pandemic for both kids and adults with ADHD, according to a recent review in the Journal of Adolescent Health.child adhd

There has also been an increase in new diagnoses of ADHD, especially among teen boys, according to multiple surveys and research. ADHD is a neurodevelopmental disorder with symptoms that include trouble paying attention and controlling impulsive behaviors, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It can be treated with medications or therapies that include strategies for promoting good behavior at home and teaching adolescents skills for coping with symptoms.

 

Pandemic Causing ADHD in Children, Teens, and Adults

The pandemic has taken its toll on millions of people around the world. Unfortunately, many people who previously had ADHD and/or other mental illnesses felt their symptoms exacerbated. However, people of all ages also seemed to develop these conditions with ADHD. 

There may be people who were struggling already, but only when they were home during the pandemic and those whose children had ADHD were observing them all day. I know it would have affected me and many others, especially children with ADHD. 

Others may not have experienced issues in normal school settings, but when they lost the structure and gained the stressors involved in the pandemic, they started having problems.

ADHD Has Not All Been Negative During the Pandemic

Not all parts of ADHD in children, teens, and/or adults have been negative.

For example, this can also be an opportunity for people with ADHD to learn how to cope better with their personal symptoms.

You can say that the silver lining of distance learning during the pandemic is that the tasks that made these changes challenging for children and adolescents with ADHD have also helped them to build stronger executive function skills.

 

How to Help ADHD in Children, Teens, and Adults Become More Focused

Not all online learning is negative to children with ADHD. It has been shown to show it can also help with planning, organizing, and working memory.

There are some kids with ADHD that are also thriving a bit with distance learning or the hybrid model because teachers are more consistent with putting stuff online. There are other kids that are struggling far more because they do a lot better with the in-person cues for remembering to do things or paying attention.

Positive rewards for good effort are also helpful for children with ADHD. Also, make sure that accommodations that children with ADHD are entitled to are being followed in remote learning.

Remember, ADHD can have similar symptoms as anxiety and depression. It's important to have a thorough evaluation from a qualified physician.
