L-DOPA is a direct precursor to dopamine. Supplementation can increase dopamine levels in the body, which can enhance mood, sexual health, and increase endurance.

It is commonly referred to as Levodopa and is one of the critical components of most Parkinson's treatments, and found in high amounts in Mucuna Pruriens. (98% in our blend)

Mucuna Pruriens contains L-DOPA, which is also commonly referred to as Levodopa.

It is a dopamine precursor, sometimes used as a pharmaceutical to treat Parkinson's Disease (alongside Carbidopa, another composite.)

Mucuna Pruriens (L-Dopa) Benefits Include:

  • Helps to boost mood and overall focus
  • Increases dopamine levels from the L-Dopa
  • Known to improve overall sense of well-being
  • Increases energy
  • Heightened motivation

How L-Dopa works and can provide benefits and act as an extremely effective nootropic supplement

  • Improved response to stress
  • Shown to improve libido and fertility. Increases testosterone levels
  • Known to decrease cortisol levels in men who are stressed.
  • Fight aging and cognitive decline while enhancing mood

Mucuna Pruriens can cross the blood-brain barrier whereas dopamine by itself, cannot.

Thus, L-DOPA is used to increase dopamine concentrations in the treatment of Parkinson's disease and dopamine-responsive dystonia. This treatment was made practical and proven clinically by George Cotzias and his coworkers, for which they won the 1969 Lasker Prize.

Once it is released into the blood, it becomes a precursor to neurotransmitters such as epinephrine (adrenaline), dopamine, and norepinephrine (noradrenaline).

By stimulating these and other hormones, L-Dopa can frequently help to create an enhanced state of mental alertness, heightened positive sensitivity to stimulus, and build lean muscle.

Note: Compounds contraindicated with Levodopa/Carbidopa treatment also apply to Mucuna Pruriens and should be approached with caution. This appears to be narrow-eye glaucoma sufferers, those using pharmaceutical MAO inhibitors, and those who have a history of melanoma or suspicious and undiagnosed skin lesions.

Mucuna Pruriens L-Dopa Supplement Science

Mucuna Pruriens is produced from the amino acid L-tyrosine by the enzyme tyrosine hydroxylase. It is also the precursor for the monoamine or catecholamine neurotransmitters dopamine, norepinephrine (noradrenaline), and epinephrine (adrenaline). Dopamine is formed by decarboxylation.

It is also the precursor for the monoamine or catecholamine neurotransmitters dopamine, norepinephrine (noradrenaline), and epinephrine (adrenaline). Dopamine is formed by the decarboxylation.

Mucuna Pruriens can be directly metabolized by catechol-O-methyl transferase to 3-O-methyldopa, and then further to vanillic acid.

This metabolic pathway is nonexistent in the healthy body but becomes important after peripheral administration in patients with Parkinson's disease or in the rare cases of patients with aromatic L-amino acid decarboxylase enzyme deficiency.[9]

The Bottom Line about Mucuna Pruriens (L-Dopa)

Along with an increase in dopamine levels, L-Dopa is also known to release Serotonin and adrenaline levels, causing an increase in mental alertness and again, a boost to overall mood. It has been reported to be used at times by recovering alcoholics and addicts to overcome withdrawal symptoms associated with alcohol and opiate withdrawal to increase dopamine and serotonin levels.

L-Dopa is an excellent addition to many different types of nootropic stacks and makes a great combination with nootropic supplements such as noopept, a racetam class nootropic supplement like Aniracetam, and a choline source like Alpha GPC.
